General
JJMJS is a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal specialising in the inter-relationship and interaction between the Jesus movement and other forms of Judaism, as well as in the process that led to the establishment of Judaism and Christianity as related but independent religions. Chronologically, the journal focuses on the period between ca. 200 BCE and 600 CE.
The editors encourage submissions in any of the following fields: Christian Origins, New Testament studies, Early Jewish Studies (including Philo and Josephus), the Dead Sea Scrolls, Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha, Rabbinic Studies, Patristics, History of Ancient Christianity, Reception History, and Archaeology.
The journal will publish new research, but also, to a limited degree, previously published studies which are deemed valuable for the purpose of the journal and will add to its archive. Readers are encouraged to submit suggestions of such previously published works to the Managing Editor.
While the journal will not publish shorter reviews, the editors welcome longer review articles of seminal works in the field. Authors should contact the Managing Editor regarding suitable books for such review articles.
Guidelines for submissions
Length: Articles should normally not exceed 10 000 words.
Style: All articles must follow the format presented in The SBL Handbook of Style: For Ancient Near Eastern, Biblical, and Early Christian Studies 2nd Edition. Edited by Patrick H. Alexander, John F. Kutsko, James D. Ernest, Shirley Decker-Lucke, and, for the SBL, David L. Petersen. Peabody: Hendrickson, 2014, available here.
The author is responsible for making sure the correct format is followed.
Language Editing: It is the responsibility of the author to ensure the article is written in good idiomatic English. British or American spelling is accepted.
Non-Latin Alphabets (Hebrew, Greek, Coptic, Syriac etc): Authors must either use Unicode fonts or transliterate words in non-Latin alphabets. For transliteration, the guidelines of the SBL Handbook of Style should be followed.
Submissions must include a list of keywords, which search engines will be able to use in order to locate the article.
Submissions must be made both in Word and pdf format.
Peer-Review Process
Once an article has been received the co-editors decide whether it will be accepted for peer-review. If the article is accepted for peer-review the author will be notified by e-mail about the estimated timeline of the peer-review process. JJMJS uses a double blind peer-review system; any details in the article which may identify the author will be removed before the article is sent off for peer-review.
Acceptance of an article is made in one of two forms: a) ‘As is,’ in which case the article will be published without any revisions required. b) The article requires (minor or major) revisions, and will be published only when the required revisions have been made and the editors have given their final approval. Articles which have been accepted for publication will be added to the earliest possible issue online.
Copyright: The author is responsible for obtaining any necessary copyright permissions relating to the content of his or her article. (See further under the tab “Copyright”)
